Cornwall’s a fantastic destination for an autumn break. Visitors can expect serene stretches of beach, warm autumnal colours that bathe the countryside and cool, refreshing weather. Most of Cornwall’s attractions remain open, yet there are fewer tourists to share them with than in summer.

Another benefit is that if you visit during half‐term, you’ll find a spooky selection of Halloween events that will keep the whole family entertained. We’ve put together a list of spine‐chilling happenings around beautiful Cornwall this year, so you can make sure your visit includes a dose of fun‐filled horror!

Halloween at Bodmin Jail

Built in 1779, Bodmin Jail has a horrifying history, having been the site of 55 public executions, with truly miserable living conditions for its inmates. Unsurprisingly, its eerie atmosphere makes it a great choice for those looking to get spooked this Halloween – with daytime family fun or grisly guided adult-only tours on the menu.

This year, the jail is also opening its ‘Dark Walk Attraction’ during the day for families, with fancy dress for the youngsters highly encouraged. With theatrical effects, plenty of spooky props, plus a glimpse into the prison’s notorious past, it’s a terrifyingly fun way to make half-term super spooky! At just a 30-minute drive from our award-winning Tregoad resort, it’s a must for thrill seekers.

Cornish Maize Maze & Fun Farm

This year at the Cornish Maize Maze and Fun Farm, take your pick from a choice of Halloween events for all ages. There’s the Pumpkin Patch (15th, 16^th, 22^nd-30^th  October) which boasts pumpkin picking, a maze, and a spooky quiz that’s ideal for families and young children.

Alternatively, those looking for a truly terrifying experience can take part in the Halloween Maze of Horrors (29^th October) which features an array of actors on hand to frighten you senseless. Described as ‘not for the faint hearted’, this 15‐minute fright‐fest is best suited for adults and older children.

Halloween Twilight Run – Scorrier House

If you fancy combining fitness with frights this Halloween then Scorrier Country House is hosting a selection of ghostly races for visitors of all ages on the 30^th October. There’s a 3 pm family fun race (for ages 5+), a 4 pm 5km race (ages 8+) or a hellish 10km race in darkness at 6 pm, which is suitable for participants aged 14 years and above. Every runner will receive a Twilight Run Halloween medal and there are special awards for the top finishers who manage to avoid the zombies!

Allantide – Wheal Martyn Clay Works & Royal Cornwall Museum

If you’d rather celebrate Halloween the traditional Cornish way then there are various Allantide events dotted around the county. This quirky, local version of Halloween predominantly focuses on apples, dating back hundreds of years to when Allan apple markets would be held throughout Cornwall. This year, you and the family can head to Wheal Martyn Clay Works to enjoy a range of Allantide activities including apple printing, corn doll making and clay play. Alternatively, have fun finding hidden apples at the Royal Cornwall Museum and learn all about Allantide. The museum will also be hosting some more conventional Halloween events with scary stories and fancy dress encouraged.

Children’s Halloween Party – Threemilestone

If you’re planning on visiting Truro with the family this half‐term then Threemilestone Community Centre is holding a children’s Halloween party on Saturday 29^th October (2 pm‐5  pm). The fun‐filled event includes a fancy-dress competition ‐ so be sure the kids are donning their spookiest looks! There’s also a puppet show, party games, prizes, music, face painting, a toy corner and a raffle. Best of all, this jam‐packed spook fest is bound to tire the kids out ‐ so you’ll hopefully get to put your feet up come evening!
